The Uses and Gratification Theory

The uses and gratifications theory assumes audiences actively seek out letters or opinion and devision to ratify individual needs.


Information 

-Finding out about relevant events and condition in immediate surroundings, society and the world
-Seeking advice on practical matters or opinions and decision choices
-Satisfying curiosity and general interests
-Learning;self-education
-Gaining a sense of security though knowledge

Personal Identity

-Finding reinforcement for personal values
-Finding models of behaviour
-Identifying with valued other (in the media)
-Gaining insight into ones self

Entertainment

-Escapism, or being diverted, from problems
-Relaxing
-Filling time
-Emotional release
-Sexual gratification

Integration and social interaction

-Gaining insight into circumstances of other social empathy 
-Identifying with others and gaining a sense of belonging 
-Finding a basis for conversation and social interaction 
-Having a substitute for real-life companionship


Target Audience Differentiation

Primary-core target audience e.g. people that play football (people that normally buy it)
Secondary-teenage girls (people that don't usually buy it)
Tertiary-people going on holiday (people who have not bought it)


GRACE

-Gender-girls and boys have different passions boy would be sold footballs more whilst girls would usually be interested into makeup and fashion.

-Race-generally people with darker skin would usually be more open minded about buying things and objects associated with them and their culture as well as people from a different race would usually sell them something from that race to sell them things.

-Age-towards different age groups elder to younger people are marketed through different things tipically elder aged people are aimed to buy canes and homely objects whilst younger age people usually buy toys and because of this the marketing technique will be adjusted to that age group.

 -Class-people from a higher class are market directly though high quality and expensive products whilst someone from a lover class typically buy cheap and low quality things such as a private jet would be aimed at higher class people. 

-Ethnicity- people from different ethnic background typically have different ethnic diversities such as Muslims who wear Burkha (more to do with culture).


NRS

A= upper middle class
B=middle class
C1=lower middle class 
C2=skilled working class 
D=working class 
E=those at the lowest levels of subsistence


The primary target audience would little girls and boys aged 5-7 who are interested into fashion and toys for the girls and football for the boys, they would be from a middle class background with a NRS social grade of B and C1.  And the secondary social grade would be the parents of the children as they would be buying the little girls and boys these things as the magazine is focusing on children their age as they would mainly be the people reading the magazine.

Magazine Task 

-The world cup magazine is marketed towards younger boys who is the primary target audience and the secondary targeted audience is elder men.

-A vogue magazine is mainly directed at women who is also the primary target whilst the secondary target is older women.

-Heat magazine is usually aimed at teenage girls who is the primary target and the secondary target would be women.


-Top Gear are primary target into upper middle class and boys and men who usually are interested into cars whilst the seconds target would be working class.

-For Muse the primary target would be men aged 30-40 who are interested in rock music whilst the secondary audience would be teenage boys.
